Welcome to the Stamping with Friends Blog Hop for August! Our theme this month is the Masking Technique. There are so many ways to use this technique. I chose Stampin’ Up!’s Masking Paper to create a mask or stencil from the Split Card Textures dies. Using the masking paper in this way allowed me to create a background effect by sponging over the design. Having a low-tack adhesive freed my hands to brush the color on creating a darker effect at the bottom and gradually getting lighter.
I love this color combination. I used colors from last year’s and this year’s color collections. The card base is Orchid Oasis and the first layer is Fresh Freesia. I carried this coordination through to the sponged image using Fresh Freesia on the beautiful textured mask while stamping the flower and sentiment in Orchid Oasis. I think my favorite part is the gradients of purple and blue hues.
Hippest Hippos!
Another way to use the masking paper for a masking technique is to block an image to create a layered look.
The second hippo appears to be catching a piggyback ride from the first hippo. First, I stamped the bottom hippo onto the scalloped rectangle. Then I stamped the same image again onto the Masking Paper and cut it out using the dies. I layered the die cut image over the first hippo, matching up the images as closely as I could before stamping the hippo holding the flower just above the covered image. Masking prevents the 2 images from becoming a big unrecognizable jumble of images. Soooo cute!
